RLB Giveaway: 3 Books, 3 Chords, and The Truth

Here’s your chance to get some free stuff: Three copies of Red Like Blood. Twenty-some bucks worth of really great music. Plus an ESV Compact Bible!

To Enter:

Simply place a “new comment” beneath this post. Only one entry per person, please. But if you forward this link to a couple friends, you can all enter and increase your collective chances of winning. Then you can share the spoils. Entries close at 6PM Eastern Time on Memorial Day.

A one-word comment will be enough to get you entered. But say whatever you like. My wife, Amy, and my former wife, Rita, will witness the drawing—so you know it will be legit. The winner will be announced on my blog post next week.

A Little Background:

Here’s how all this came about. Last week one of our blog subscribers pointed out that there are fifteen references to music in Red Like Blood. I did not know that, but I wasn’t surprised. It prompted me to come up with the RLB Playlist below. It consists of the songs I refer to in RLB, plus some of the ones I’ve mentioned in the blog, plus a few from the “Bob’s Faves Secular” playlist in my iTunes.

Anyway, before you enter you should know a couple things. First, Joe did not contribute to this playlist and I did not consult him about it. Joe does not like music much. He likes TV. Second, this is all secular music. I have a separate Bob’s Faves Worship playlist. Maybe if this giveaway gets traction I will share that one, too, some day.

The Soundtrack (?):

Putting this together caused me to fantasize a little. The style and approach to transparent disclosure we used in writing RLB was inspired by a book called Blue Like Jazz, which is being turned into a movie to be released this fall. It will have a soundtrack. So I pretended my playlist would become the RLB soundtrack some day when they make it into a movie. Joe would be played by George Clooney, don’t ya think?

I know what you’re thinking—in your dreams.

The Playlist:

If you win, in addition to the three books and the Bible, you will get these fifteen songs—legally downloaded and burned on a CD. I’ve included some links in case you don’t win but still want to hear (and see) the songs. Enjoy:

Maybe I’m Amazed (Paul McCartney)- The song the Cute Beatle sang right after he blew Amy the kiss and winked at her. See page 70 of RLB. The video link features some very touching photos of Paul with his beloved wife, Linda, and two of their kids. Click here:  http://youtu.be/cm2YyVZBL8U

Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen)- Yes. I really did help The Boss play his guitar during his encore performance. This is a great clip from that era where at 2:12 you can see the Clarence Clemmons sax riff I wrote about on pages 70-71. http://youtu.be/IxuThNgl3YA

Everybody is a Star (Sly and the Family Stone)- from RLB page 184. I love the music and the lyrics. I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times.  http://youtu.be/-IOI39HnB1I

She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah) (The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show)- This is what I heard through the bedroom door on page 21. Click this if you need an instant smile or laugh. These screaming girls are hilarious.  http://youtu.be/sX1jFJmC13A

Forever Young (Bob Dylan)- He has inspired me for years. I wrote about him in one of my very first blog posts here. But I don’t think anyone read it. Check it out if you like. http://youtu.be/9sldgunY3Fw

I’m Gonna Be—500 Miles (The Proclaimers)- From one of my more recent blog posts. This song is dripping with passion. It’s a classic and I never get tired of it.   http://redlikeblood.com/2011/04/19/i-would-walk-500-miles/

My Generation (The Who)- The first draft of RLB included my story of getting up close and personal with Pete Townsend during a Who concert. Maybe I’ll post it someday if anybody wants to hear about it.  http://youtu.be/594WLzzb3JI

Friends (Elton John)- From Bob’s Faves playlist. If I think about you when I hear this song it means you are in my “Top Five” along with Scott Mabee and Brad Cvammen.  http://youtu.be/Zuzi-yH9VLo

Day After Day (Badfinger)- One of the greatest rock ballads EVER! I’ve heard this song thousands of times. It never fails to make me feel good. http://youtu.be/um4pnvJr07A

Our House (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young)- One of my all-time favorites. I don’t see Neil here, but David Crosby is a hoot. I had a face-to-face encounter with Neil Young once. It happened behind Blossom Music Center at the door of his rock star bus. He spoke to me but I can’t repeat it here.   http://youtu.be/NZtJWJe_K_w

All I Want (Joni Mitchell)- I bet you’ve never seen this incredible video made while the song was still a work in progress. I think Joni feels more in her little pinkie than most people do in their entire existence.   http://youtu.be/BQpZXUGRy1U

Blossom (James Taylor)- One of my favorite musicians singing one of my favorite songs. Amy and I saw this show live, but not front row. Carole King was in it, too.  http://youtu.be/T7Kua1X2UUI

Morning has Broken (Cat Stevens)- I picked this YouTube version for two reasons. First, the guy on the piano is classic 70’s. And I got a bit of a chuckle from some of the comments below the video.   http://youtu.be/U5sSEkZ86ts

Hazy Shade of Winter (The Bangles)- Perhaps the greatest all-girl rock song of all time. Okay, except for Chrissy Hynde’s Pretender’s song about our mutual hometown.  http://youtu.be/taf8fYP9Y-A

Beautiful Day (U2)- Word on the street has it that Amy and I will be up-close-and-personal with Bono in a couple months. Backstage passes are in the works from an undisclosed source. And why do I wonder why people love to hate me?  http://youtu.be/JZzpqtekRoI

These are fifteen of the sixty-one songs in Bob’s Faves. I will even let the winner pick one bonus track of their choice.

Let the commenting begin:

Count me in! I would walk 500 miles for 3 more copies of RLB. It’s my favorite giveaway.

    • Bob

Yea! We have one entry! So now at least I know this idea won’t be a total flop. Thanks, Jay!

  • Ron

After reading Red Like Blood, I began to wonder what grace would look like in my marriage.  As I prayed and meditated upon it, grace began to flow into our home.  God is Great!  Thanks Bob and Joe.  Oh and I could sure use 3 more copies to pass out to friends.

  • kbarbelfam

Have already given away the 3 extra copies I pre-ordered, plus mooched one off of Joe’s brother Brian – AND I don’t intend to give away the copy Joe signed for me (it has that oft-rehearsed signature in it…and might be worth something when he’s REALLY famous – and George Clooney is cast as Joe in a movie ;) .  So, toss my name in the hat, and let the winning begin!

And while I find this playlist fun, and mildly entertaining, your worship selections would be much more meaningful to me, Bob.  :)

    • Bob

I listen to my Bob’s Faves Worship playlist at least ten times more than my Secular one. No, twenty times more. It will blow you away. Transport you.

Who knows, maybe I’ll do another Giveaway someday . . .

If you don’t want to wait for that to find out what’s on it, send me a request by email, and I will copy/paste the list of the twenty-eight songs and email it to you. Bob@BobBevington.com

    • Joe Coffey

I’m right about my signature aren’t I? have you ever seen a dorkier one unless you count Bob’s? My brother Brian has a cool one.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000318083828 Tracy Aloisio Barbel

It’s not at all dorky, Joe!  And I don’t have Bob’s autograph (yet) for comparison.

And, yes, I think Brian has very cool handwriting. But then again, I think most things about your brother Brian are pretty cool.  Except for the fact that he recently compared eating my meat-wrapped fruit to Timon tasting Pumba’s crunchy bugs.

This talk inspires an idea…I know a guy who does handwriting analysis. I am a nervous wreck anytime I send anything written to him or his wife.  Not really.  Ok, maybe a little. :)  Don’t worry, I would never do that to anybody I really like –  though it is really creepy how spot on Dale is with that!

  • Trevor Schuh

I’ve been hoping to get this book since I saw it announced, but living on a missionary’s budget, this is the perfect way to get it in my hands!  I think Clooney would make an excellent Joe Coffey, too.

    • Bob

Dude, email me your snail mail address. I’m sending you a copy of RLB whether you win or not! And thank you for subscribing to our blog! Bob@BobBevington.com

  • Kaykalra

    Love it! I’m in.

    • Bob

      U2 Baby!

  • Jerry

No matter what the melody is, “The Blood still flows RED” and covers us ALL.

“Joe Clooney” maybe the world did end last week! :)

    JG

  • Drdonnelly_2000

I’m thinking McDreamy  (ie Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy).

    • Bob

Sorry. I don’t watch much TV so I’ll have to ask Joe Clooney what you mean. But you’re still entered in the Giveaway.

Come to think of it, I watch parts of American Idol. And all Buckeye football games if I’m not there in person. That’s about it. I’m still ticked they kicked James Durbin off.

  • didi

    HOpe I win! :)
    Didi

  • J Tanner

I’m in it to win it!  Burt Reynolds would make a great young Joe.  Great ‘stache.

    • Bob

      But isn’t Burt Reynolds dead?

      • J Tanner

        Not yet…according to Wikipedia.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000318083828 Tracy Aloisio Barbel

He’s still far too old to be Joe!  A future, old Joe, maybe?

  • Babwk

I think you stole some of MY albums! And to think I blamed David! Haha! Inside family jokes are the best. Anyone else got any?

    • Bob

Um. And to think that I had forgotten about the unexplained disappearance of my vinyl copy of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young: Deja Vu. And Abbey Road. Oh, and Woodstock.

Okay, Bob: Remember the cross and re-forget the offense.

But for you outsiders, know this: I never stole my sisters’ albums. Why would I? Bobby Sherman and The Partridge Family?

  • Michelle Delly

Sign me up! Love the book so far!

  • Paula Collins

Bob, I knew I liked you for some reason.  A real “Rocker” like me.  I think a lot of people forget there are plenty of great secular songs out there because we seem to be so inundated with a lot of junk on the radio today.  Definately want to be in your drawing. Red Like Blood is an awesome book that I truly believe has the potential to change many hearts.

  • http://twitter.com/cruciformlife Jimmy Davis

Bob, I’m loving the book so far.  The stories you both tell have increased my amazement at the grace of God in my own life.  Thanks for being real.  Great idea for a give-away!

    • Bob

Jimmy Davis is the author of the recent release, Cruciform: Living the Cross-shaped Life. Check out this excellent short book at http://cruciformpress.com/our-books/cruciform/

I might even have a copy of Jimmy’s book to add to the Giveaway stash. . .

  • Kevin Fiske

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • deb davis

Definitely not George Clooney. Deb Davis

    • Bob

Okay Deb. You are entered for the Giveaway.

But tell me please, if not George Clooney, who do you think should play Joe?

  • Bob

Did ANYONE watch the Joni Mitchell link? How about The Who or the Ed Sullivan one?

  • http://twitter.com/mdwicks mdwicks

    Great giveaway!

  • http://www.danpage.us Dan Page

I want the stuff :-) … I’m grateful for you!

  • John Perritt

Bob – I’m on chapter 10 and I LOVE the book.  It has been a great read; very convicting and encouraging!  Thank you for your boldness and openness.  To all those who are commenting, if you do not win the giveaway be sure and buy the book…it’s great!

  • Laprez1

Ok  I am now re-reading the book(that I just received and finished on Saturday) and i’ve been blabbing about it to most of my real friends(and fb friends too) so if I win I can give them away-love the playlist-so that would be cool too. I think the book would make a great movie-not a cheesy Christian movie but one that would draw anyone into the story of Gods grace for all of us.Thank you for writing RLB-praying what i’ve gleaned sinks deep into my soul

  • MLBatbat

    I hope I win

  • Missy Evans

I have shared this book (all 5 of our copies) with many people and the more I have in my possession, the more I will be able to share with even more people! YAY!

  • Jane Walker Schopper

Bob, just how did I know you had recently co-authored another book?  I am led down certain paths…have been for years. My copy from Amazon just arrived. I’ve been perusing various sections and will certainly read it cover to cover. I’ll give you a heartfelt assessment when I’m done, okay? I’m sure it will involve my impressions from a certain time.  Already, one section brought tears to my eyes.  I’m a big fan of grace, and an even bigger fan of forgiveness. I anxiously look forward to Rita’s book. Please give her my best.

    • Bob

Jane Walker? As in from high school Jane Walker?

      • Jane Walker Schopper

        You got it, Bob:)

  • John Schott

Bob, I’ve got questions…When you are listening to “Friends” by Elton John, how do you have the self control to not think about friend number six? And is ranking friends cheesy? And is your list of who you would take a bullet for a totally different list of 5 friends? If so, what is their song? Are you seeing anyone to seek counsel for your name-dropping problem? Has Pastor Coffey considered writing a blog about how you have a favorite all-time song, book, sermon/message, conference, etc…and as soon as you turn someone on to one of them…your all-time favorite changes?  Are you seeking counsel for that? Are you laughing yet?

    • Bob

Dear Uncle Schott. Thank you for these insightful questions. I will only answer two of them for now. Yes. It is cheesy. And yes. I am laughing. Thanks for that.

  • http://twitter.com/jchrisland Chris Land

    Bob,
Loved your two books with Jerry Bridges and I know I will love this book.

  • Jesus6r

I am intrigued by the “confrontations with grace”

  • Colleen

I love “Red like Blood” and want to share it with many of my friends. Thanks for the opportunity to have more copies but still keep mine. I also looked up each song you mentioned and would love to have them to play in the car. Living in the awsome Grace of our Lord! Colleen

  • Micah

    Word!

  • http://twitter.com/steve_vernon Steve Vernon

Well if I win the book, that’s $10 I don’t have to give to Amazon. Lord knows, they get enough of my money already!

  • SterlingSellman

Somebody please bless a poor college student!

  • Jeremy Chambers

This was a fun idea. I would love to win so I can enjoy the music and share your book with others (I already have one copy).

  • Teamhauschild

Trying to get this AMAZING book into as many hands as I can!  Drove up from Athens, OH, last week & stopped at the church to pick up another copy as I got off on Rt. 8! Looking forward to Joe’s book that comes out in June!  Thanks for thinking of the giveway……Still loving & singing  ‘I would walk 500 miiles’………

    • Bob

It’s so cool that you like “500 Miles” too! Not too many people will admit it.

Anyway, I hope you win. But with both my wife and my former wife witnessing the drawing, between the two of them any hope of me giving you an unfair advantage will be thwarted. Sorry!

  • Lloyd

Just finished Red Like Blood…God is really working a new work within…this book is one of many amazing confirmations of Grace in my life…and thanks

  • JL

Trying to order my copy of RLB but to no avail – the only time I wish I wasn’t Canadian =(

  • Ann Eckman

Thanks for the great list! I’m sorry that you only got to listen to the Beatles through your door. I was in our living room watching them. (The advantage of being older.) I still have their first album. I’d really love to have your Christian list. Please?

  • Brian

Great book.  I’ve given a few away already.  What a great opportunity to bless 3 more.

  • Josh Dear

Those are some truly great songs, Bob!  It sounds like you and I not only share a conviction in the sufficiency of Christ, but also similar interests in great music – whether Christian or mainstream.  Blessings to you, my friend, and thanks for offering these nice gifts to (one of) us!
