Here’s your chance to get some free stuff: Three copies of Red Like Blood. Twenty-some bucks worth of really great music. Plus an ESV Compact Bible!
To Enter:
Simply place a “new comment” beneath this post. Only one entry per person, please. But if you forward this link to a couple friends, you can all enter and increase your collective chances of winning. Then you can share the spoils. Entries close at 6PM Eastern Time on Memorial Day.
A one-word comment will be enough to get you entered. But say whatever you like. My wife, Amy, and my former wife, Rita, will witness the drawing—so you know it will be legit. The winner will be announced on my blog post next week.
A Little Background:
Here’s how all this came about. Last week one of our blog subscribers pointed out that there are fifteen references to music in Red Like Blood. I did not know that, but I wasn’t surprised. It prompted me to come up with the RLB Playlist below. It consists of the songs I refer to in RLB, plus some of the ones I’ve mentioned in the blog, plus a few from the “Bob’s Faves Secular” playlist in my iTunes.
Anyway, before you enter you should know a couple things. First, Joe did not contribute to this playlist and I did not consult him about it. Joe does not like music much. He likes TV. Second, this is all secular music. I have a separate Bob’s Faves Worship playlist. Maybe if this giveaway gets traction I will share that one, too, some day.
The Soundtrack (?):
Putting this together caused me to fantasize a little. The style and approach to transparent disclosure we used in writing RLB was inspired by a book called Blue Like Jazz, which is being turned into a movie to be released this fall. It will have a soundtrack. So I pretended my playlist would become the RLB soundtrack some day when they make it into a movie. Joe would be played by George Clooney, don’t ya think?
I know what you’re thinking—in your dreams.
The Playlist:
If you win, in addition to the three books and the Bible, you will get these fifteen songs—legally downloaded and burned on a CD. I’ve included some links in case you don’t win but still want to hear (and see) the songs. Enjoy:
Maybe I’m Amazed (Paul McCartney)- The song the Cute Beatle sang right after he blew Amy the kiss and winked at her. See page 70 of RLB. The video link features some very touching photos of Paul with his beloved wife, Linda, and two of their kids. Click here: http://youtu.be/cm2YyVZBL8U
Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen)- Yes. I really did help The Boss play his guitar during his encore performance. This is a great clip from that era where at 2:12 you can see the Clarence Clemmons sax riff I wrote about on pages 70-71. http://youtu.be/IxuThNgl3YA
Everybody is a Star (Sly and the Family Stone)- from RLB page 184. I love the music and the lyrics. I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times. http://youtu.be/-IOI39HnB1I
She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah) (The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show)- This is what I heard through the bedroom door on page 21. Click this if you need an instant smile or laugh. These screaming girls are hilarious. http://youtu.be/sX1jFJmC13A
Forever Young (Bob Dylan)- He has inspired me for years. I wrote about him in one of my very first blog posts here. But I don’t think anyone read it. Check it out if you like. http://youtu.be/9sldgunY3Fw
I’m Gonna Be—500 Miles (The Proclaimers)- From one of my more recent blog posts. This song is dripping with passion. It’s a classic and I never get tired of it. http://redlikeblood.com/2011/04/19/i-would-walk-500-miles/
My Generation (The Who)- The first draft of RLB included my story of getting up close and personal with Pete Townsend during a Who concert. Maybe I’ll post it someday if anybody wants to hear about it. http://youtu.be/594WLzzb3JI
Friends (Elton John)- From Bob’s Faves playlist. If I think about you when I hear this song it means you are in my “Top Five” along with Scott Mabee and Brad Cvammen. http://youtu.be/Zuzi-yH9VLo
Day After Day (Badfinger)- One of the greatest rock ballads EVER! I’ve heard this song thousands of times. It never fails to make me feel good. http://youtu.be/um4pnvJr07A
Our House (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young)- One of my all-time favorites. I don’t see Neil here, but David Crosby is a hoot. I had a face-to-face encounter with Neil Young once. It happened behind Blossom Music Center at the door of his rock star bus. He spoke to me but I can’t repeat it here. http://youtu.be/NZtJWJe_K_w
All I Want (Joni Mitchell)- I bet you’ve never seen this incredible video made while the song was still a work in progress. I think Joni feels more in her little pinkie than most people do in their entire existence. http://youtu.be/BQpZXUGRy1U
Blossom (James Taylor)- One of my favorite musicians singing one of my favorite songs. Amy and I saw this show live, but not front row. Carole King was in it, too. http://youtu.be/T7Kua1X2UUI
Morning has Broken (Cat Stevens)- I picked this YouTube version for two reasons. First, the guy on the piano is classic 70’s. And I got a bit of a chuckle from some of the comments below the video. http://youtu.be/U5sSEkZ86ts
Hazy Shade of Winter (The Bangles)- Perhaps the greatest all-girl rock song of all time. Okay, except for Chrissy Hynde’s Pretender’s song about our mutual hometown. http://youtu.be/taf8fYP9Y-A
Beautiful Day (U2)- Word on the street has it that Amy and I will be up-close-and-personal with Bono in a couple months. Backstage passes are in the works from an undisclosed source. And why do I wonder why people love to hate me? http://youtu.be/JZzpqtekRoI
These are fifteen of the sixty-one songs in Bob’s Faves. I will even let the winner pick one bonus track of their choice.
