New Year’s Resolution

I came up with this New Year’s Resolution: Pray More. Then I asked myself why I needed a resolution for that.

This video by David Platt answers that question. And, better yet, it points to the remedy. This is 1:49 worth starting your year off watching:

The problem lies in my heart–in my values, my priorities, my passions. The solution requires a change at that level. Where is that gonna come from?

I know that I know the answer. It comes from gazing at the cross, and everything it represents in the fullness of its meaning. Ultimately I don’t do that enough and so I don’t pray enough.

So I adjusted my New Years Resolution:

Meditate on the cross continually–on the Good News that emanates from it, and on the glory of the Only Begotten Son who was nailed in that place where the justice and love of the Triune God collided in His broken body.

By following this path I pray there will be more prayer in your New Year. And in mine!

Ouch. Can we add, if we are watching TV and mindlessly surfing the internet we also don’t need to read our Bibles? What if my commitment was that I would spend no more time on those things than I do on the combination of my time in prayer and Bible reading and reflection? Would that change my life somehow?
